Today we continued our discovery of New York in Downtown Manhattan.
Our first visit was to Federal Hall on Wall Street, once the city's Custom House & later the site of George Washington's inauguration. There we had a talk from a park service ranger before viewing the building itself.
Afterwards we walked, passing two former 'Tallest Building in the World', to the African Burial Ground where thousands of slaves & freed men were buried in the 17th & 18th centuries. We watched an introductory video, had a short talk from a park ranger, & viewed the memorial.
As we were running slightly late we had time for a very quick lunch, then 'power walked' to our next visit, the Tenement Museum.
Located in a genuine former Lower East Side tenement building where generations of poor immigrants lived, the excellent museum brings the immigrant experience to life. We split into four groups to enjoy talks & a living history encounter.
The rest of the afternoon was free for us to enjoy some time for shopping in Chinatown, before we met up for dinner - a Chinese banquet of course.
After dinner we walked to the nearby Brooklyn Bridge. Our timing was perfect with the sun setting as we walked across the bridge & enjoyed the great views over the East River & back to Manhattan's skyscrapers. A great war to end another great day.
